Scholarship Application

The University of Wisconsin System and the University of Wisconsin-Extension in partnership with The Stephens Group, invites Wisconsin educators to apply for for an Ide@s Scholarship. Recipients of the scholarship will be reimbursed their attendance fee (a $350 value) to the Milwaukee Digital Media Conference July 27th-30th at the Milwaukee Art Museum.

The Milwaukee Digital Media Conference is a unique hands-on collaborative conference. Participants work with instructors from The Stephens Group and staff from the art museum to utilize 21st century skills in order to create relevant real-world products. The conference is appropriate for educators of all disciplines and grade levels. You will experience the true power of distributed learning in a collaborative environment.

In this year's conference, we will go behind the scenes with museum staff to learn what it takes to bring a piece of artwork to the museum for public exhibition. The work we produce will be used as part of the Junior Docent Program at the museum. Two technologies that we will be focusing on this year include Diigo, a social bookmarking tool and Dipity a multimedia online timeline. We will also be learning about copyright, wikis, and how to take, house and edit digital photos and movies.

In addition to the conference, participants will be required to take a one credit online course during a window between September 13th through October 31st. During this online class, you will design a lesson or unit in the subject area you teach using one of the technology tools that you learned about in the conference. The lesson plan design will use the Understanding by Design framework. Participants in the course will peer review one another's work in the course.

Lesson plans and units developed in the course will be posted on the ide@s portal, a statewide portal to an online database that allows Wisconsin PK-12 educators to search for high-quality online resources (lesson plans, high-quality images, video, and interactive learning tools) aligned with the Wisconsin Model Academic Standards.

Graduate Credit
Participants can earn three graduate credits through Viterbo University for $270 (or $90 per credit). Graduate credits are not covered under the scholarship and participants must pay tuition on their own. The course-work is embedded in the conference and online course. The expectations for course work and conference participation is the same for credit and non-credit participants.

Eligibility
In order to apply, you must be a state-certified classroom teacher or library media specialist in Wisconsin. We are seeking educators who are 21st century learners, exhibit leadership qualities, have strong writing skills and an aptitude for curriculum design. Participants will be asked to pay the full registration ($350) to the conference and will be reimbursed when their unit has passed the peer review process and is ready for posting on the ide@s website.

The deadline to apply is April 26th. Winners will be announced May 1st. Twenty scholarships are available. We are seeking teachers who represent a variety of subject areas and grade levels.
